This is a photo of a Butterfly Dance cape. I guess this would be similar to Isis Wings for Belly dancer costume.

Mermaid costume?

I'm trying to come up with a good mermaid-themed costume for next summer (trying to get ahead with my costumes for once). I've got most of the top figured out, but I'm having some trouble with the bottom. I don't want to be constricted. I want to be able to dance and have a good time. I was thinking of maybe doing a tribal bellydance style belt, like Rachel Brice or Zoe Jakes, with maybe a skirt underneath. Not sure yet. Any ideas/ suggestions?

A plethora of pretties!

Sometimes too many choices, no matter how lovely it sounds, only complicates things. I've been piling all the FW possibliities onto the guest bed and I just sorted them all out into projects. There are more projects than there are festival days. And more than one direction to take each project.

I have four ideas for Hubby's outfits, plus some from last year he could reuse. It's not really a matter of deciding as much as a matter of how much time I'll have to work on things. He likes dressing up but he takes half his outfit off within a few hours of arriving each day anyway, so I'm not stressing on it too much.

I've got two fae girl outfits to make, one for each granddaughter. Got plans in my head, just have to follow through.

Now it starts to get more complicated. Me. I have two ideas for the first two days that I'm set on. At least that's good. I've decided to be a chocolate faery for Good Faery Day. This was a new idea I stumbled on when I discovered that I had the right pile of skirt, shirt, and leggings to make it work. Plan in my head. All good. But then I found another skirt at the thrift shop that I could take the outfit a completely different direction and now I don't know which way I wanna go with it. And I had a vest, found two MORE vests. Sigh, why do I complicate things.

Second day I have an outfit planned out and just need to finish making embellishments and things. I'm having trouble finding something I need to make the wings but I either find it or I don't and I make it without. Not too complicated.

Third day I think I'm gonna be a scrappy faery. The idea has morphed several times over this last year and I now have a pile of lovely goodies to create this outfit.

BUT, I also have this really neat skirt that's like a tropical flower and it would be fun to be a tropical faery. And I have this beautiful rainbow colored twirl skirt that wouldn't be any kind of faery at all but still, would be fun to wear. I'm pretty sure I'm gonna go with the scrappy idea, but haven't committed yet.

Course it's not really complicated - I just need to start on the projects I know I want to do and work towards the more iffy ones. And by then I'll probably have run out of time and I'll just do the easiest thing - LOL.

Just wanted to talk shop.

Watcha all up to in these last frenetic get-ready weeks?

I just came home from Ross (a discount dept store). For less than $12. I got enough to make four costumes for Faerieworlds. Check out the table runners. Most have beaded edges or fringe or tassels. Cut in half crosswize ithe runner becomes a pair of wings with a little shoulder shaping. A large tablecloth is a sarong, a shawl, a wrap skirt, etc. In the one of a kind curtains dept. I found sheers, velvets, brocades, silk-like panels. The panels with valances attached can be elegant capes. Just run a curtain tieback thru the rod pocket and tie around your shoulders. A topper swag ($1.99) is nine feet long! Think sari, veils, belly dance costumes. I found a beaded valance that is going to be my headress for Green Woman outfit.Just slip a headband into the rod pocket....See you at Ross?

I'm a plus size so the store must have size 16 to 18 dresses / costumes.

Gathering garb

Yesterday I had to go to Walmart to buy a portapotty and some deodorant (don't I live an exciting life!?) and I figured I might as well take a browse through the craft and fabric department. They had two fabrics in the $2 a yard bin that might work for one of my outfit ideas. How could I resist at that price. I've been trying to find a dress or skirt as a base so I don't have to actually MAKE anything from a pattern (I don't like working with patterns, and they never fit right), but so far nothing. I haven't given up yet. But I figured if I didn't use the fabrics for FW, I could still make some beautiful fae garments to wear any time. I even bought a pattern so I'd be all set if the muse strikes late some night.

I also saw a really neat pattern for a corset - http://www.simplicity.com/dv1_v4.cfm?design=2966 I've got my heart set on wearing a corset one day. This particular pattern includes a version made out of magazine images - how cool is that. I decided not to buy the pattern until I get some more info on actually WEARING a corset. Anyone have any recommendations on what type to wear - I want the look more than the actual binding. Do people prefer the kind that tuck under the boobs or over them? With or without shoulder straps? You don't find a lot of corsets in thrift shops around here. Like, oh, none. Wait a minute. I found one - for my DIL for her costume last year.

Went to the thrift shop last week and found a pair of "elf" looking sandals and a pair of no heel knee high leather boots in MY size - wow. I can wear both pair with ordinary outfits, but they also might work for FW. I could slip from flip flops to the boots if it gets cool after sun down.

I can't get into my studio to do any actual sewing or creating yet. For one thing it's a mess and there's lots of cleaning and organizing to do first. And before I can even do THAT, I have to finish up the rest of the cleaning and organizing in our yard and garage in preparation for some major house repairs planned for this weekend. Hence the need for a portapotty. I'm so glad to finally getting it done. And then I'll have my hands full putting everything back together, including my garden. THEN, I can get back to faerifying things.

Anyone else finding any pretties or thrift store finds or fabrics?

FW garb - starting to get excited.

Only a little over four months until Faerieworlds and I'm starting to think a lot about my personas for this year's festival. This will be my third year. The first year we all "sorta" had costumes, realized immediately that we were way under dressed. So my family and friends and I chatted about costumes off and on the whole year prior to last year's festival, snapping up potential garments and accessories at thrift shops when we found them. Spent a lot of time in the weeks leading up to it making final decisions, putting it all together, creating wings. Now THIS YEAR, I want my outfits to be even more magical.

The second year there were two ideas I knew I wanted to follow. My bad faerie outfit ended up being very close to the way I had imagined it for an entire year. The second idea was more of a general "woodsy" theme and it ended up slipping into an autumn faery look, but it worked out nicely. I can't even remember what the good faery costume was orginally supposed ... oh yes I do, it was going to be a butterfly theme. But at the last minute it decided it wanted to be a French Fee.

So this year I've had a few ideas but nothing specific. I've been happy to let ideas float by and percolate and mingle and converse in my head knowing that I'd feel differently when it finally came time to start creating. But now a few ideas are beginning to gel.

One idea centers around a skirt I found at the thrift store that just seems to wonderful not to dance in it. It's black "petals" with a bright tropical flower design on it. I'm thinking of going with a tropical faery theme, probably for the third day. Another thrift store skirt find, this one recent, combined with watching an old BBC fantasy mini-series, gave me a totally cool theme for another outfit just last night! Really excited about it, hope I can figure out how to pull it off. I'm thinking it could go either for good or bad faery day, I'd rather for good faery though, because I'd like to do something far more wicked for bad faery day.

I had an idea for bad faery day but now that I've mulled it around a bit I'm wondering if I can actually pull it off. Or more to the point, if it would be too complicated to bother. We'll be camping and I don't know how much make up and hair work I want to put into it. Comfort and coolness (as in temperature, not in chic-ness) are just as important as how awesome I want it to look, so, maybe I'll have to find another idea.

Anyway, all this just to say "I'm getting excited about making my outfits!!! Are you!!??? Tell me about it. I like to keep a bit of a surprise going, but I want to to talk with people who are sharing my enthusiasm.

Elfing Around!

Elfing Around
I've got this very crazy bit of creativity, that may work and be very fun for me. Over Christmas I started showing up to work dressed as an Elf. I realized, my potential to make people laugh, and be happy. I felt that the Elf costume really fit my personality very well. During several Halloweens, I had dressed up, as either a Court Jester or a "Mardi-Gras" clown. These outfits were similar, but different. Most on-lookers have had very positive things to say, so I had decided that it would be very fun to dress up, on special occassions, or any other excuse to express my "Elfness". So I am now trying to build my own "DIY" wardrobe of Elf, Jester, clown, or fairy garb, in an attempt to fully express myself and be different. I know it sounds very corny, but I feel that I have alot in common, with those "Mythical" characters, and I think that it would be very fun to express that side of myself, and release my inner child.

Below, I have compiled some very interesting article links, for anyone to enjoy.

Hi :-)
My names Karen and I'm the editor of Faeries and Enchantment magazine (FAE MAG)
New tribe for faerie artists, musicians, writers, etc...

I have noticed on other fairy tribes that artists might post paintings and some comments and writers might share a piece or two, but I think alot more of them just lurk, so I started a new tribe that is a place to share work with other artists and get inspired and encouraged. So put yourself out there and share your visions with other artists. This is a tribe for artists, writers, musicians and lovers of fantasy and Faerie to share their visions with their fellows. Also posting of any art related topics and things or books that might be of interest to other Faerie or fantasy artists, writers, musicians, etc. is strongly encouraged :-) Hope you will join me :-)

A Fairy Dress for a Very Good Cause - Help Me Help My Friends

Hello all,

I need your help getting the word out on a dress that I am selling.

On June 4th, my very good friends lost their 15-year-old daughter in a terrible car accident. I've decided to list my dresses on Ebay and donate whatever they sell for to them to help with funeral costs. It has been a devastating week and there is nothing more helpless than watching someone you love go through such terrible pain.

I've done a listing on Ebay for any one of my dresses or a custom designed piece, whatever the winning bidder wants. The listing started at only $20, but I'm hoping it will really skyrocket.

If you blog, or send out emails a lot, anything to help me help them would be more than appreciated guys.

Here is a link to the Ebay listing:

I had this most excellent dream about a mermaid. Which counts as a sea faerie, so there.
Think Abe Sapien from hellboy, plus arthur spiderwick's mermaids, plus Brian Foud's Merrow from Faeries.

Long description:
Blue dappled skin tone, with green, purple and black in there, with a yellow/purple underbelly. Black splotchy markings
almost non-existent nose (voldemort esque)
not hair in the conventional sense, but a partial mane of jellyfish tentacles
A yellow colored flair along the jawline that would pop up when frightened
large "fins" that stretch from the wrist to the torso, almost like batwings, but not so far out

Any ideas, anybody? where to get large amounts of foam latex and make a mold for it? Has anyone ever made a mermaid tail that worked underwater?

Felt durability?

I'm considering using either acrylic or wool felt in a headdress I'll be wearing at an outdoor event. Chances are good we'll get some rain. Does anyone have any experience with felt and how it holds up to light rain? I'd rather not have to de-costume if we're going to get a few sprinkles. Anyone who knows whether acrylic will hold up better than wool(and I assume it would) gets a cookie. Okay maybe not a cookie, I don't really bake. Eternal gratitude?

Fancy Fairy wings wholesale! And guess which celebrity owns a pair...

Fancy Fairy wings being produced for resale! And guess which celebrity owns a pair..

That’s right, Fancy Fairy wings are being produced for the resale market this year! I will finally be able to offer my iridescent wings to the public at a very reasonable $38, that’s down from $70 if you include shipping costs!
If online ordering isn’t your thing, let your local costume shop or Halloween store know that you need Fancy Fairy wings! If you’d like to sell them yourself, go to www.bumpinthenightproductions.com and click on the wholesale tab for contact info.

If you want a pair for yourself, go to www.fancyfairy.com, and click on the Wings button. There you’ll see the new retail Azarelle wings at the top. If you pre-order them now, you’ll get free shipping! Let everyone know who has wished they could buy these wings but didn’t because the $70 price tag made them hesitate. And let your local stores know that they have customers who want to buy them. Let’s raise the bar on costume wing standards!

I also discovered something last week that surprised the hell out of me! I was at the Halloween tradeshow in Vegas, and Bridget Marquardt from Girls Next Door was there. She loves Halloween and dressing up. When I got home, I suddenly remembered that a couple years ago a costume maker had bought a pair of custom wings for her customer who was going to wear the outfit at a Playboy Mansion party. She had sent me a link to the photo back then, and I remembered seeing a cute blonde in the costume with Hugh Hefner and Holly. So I did a little searching on the web and holy hell, it’s Bridget! She was the moviegowns.com customer who wore the wings and green fairy outfit to the Playboy Mansion! I only wish the wings were more visible in the photo with her and Hef, but it’s still pretty nice to know my wings made it onto the back of an actual Playboy bunny! Wanna see? Go the gallery page at fancyfairy.com:)

Waking Dream, the performance company that has brought giant puppets to the Starwood Festival for the last five years, is seeking artists interested in helping us build and perform new work at this year's Starwood Festival, and at other regional gatherings this summer.

Experience not necessary, however we are looking for people who have confidence making things and performing in front of people. Must be will to challenge ones self and be willing to perform in bizarre, sometime uncomfortable costumes.

So, what is everyone's opinion of wearing fur, or leather for that matter? Sometimes I don't know how to feel, but in general, I think I am alright with it. I mean, being connected to the planet, I feel more comfortable wearing clothing that came from the planet. It's biodegradable (unless I am mistaken), and it's recycling the animal. And unfortunately I am rather unknowledgeable on how the animal fur/skin is attained, so I guess this is kind of a mixed bag. But is it better than wearing synthetic suede, made of unknown and man made materials? So what is everyone's take on this?

Faery wing help :)

Hello Faeries!

I've been making wings to quite a while now. Mostly i make custome designs for specific people, and in nearly all cases the requests have been for smallish wings they can wear to dance parties and not get stuck on things, other dancers and doors to portable toilets (the many hazards of being a faery). However Ive been branching into larger and larger wings and am looking for some suggestions for better ways to attach them to you. Small ones all the use the elastic, satin, leather (whatever) under the arms, but Im finding this not suitable for bigger sets. they seem to move around to much, they ride up too high, they twist sideways....Ive discovered alot of this can be overcome by paying more attention to balance but i think there must be better solutions......I attempted making myself a pair that attached to suspenders which worked great and sat great and then i realised i would need to actually take my wings off to use the loo (in addition to my skirts and belts and dangley hats and everything else im trying to not drop in the toilet) which at a festival is a real pain!

Any suggestions.....

:)

So I got tierd of dying my hair funky colors, and I keep it pretty short....but I really like to dress my head up sometimes...
It all started with some hair falls that I bought off Ebay..they were great, but to "muppety"...I wanted a softer more feminie faerie look, so I got inspired and figured out how to make these simple head changers....my how to guide is located in my album...it is a step-by-step guide that I share with you for your own pleasure and inspiration!
Let me know if you have questions as I took these pics. myself and some steps may be easier to understand than others. I am sure there are other ways to attach them as well....
Have Fun!

Fairy Mask!

Hi, haven't posted here much but I finally have something to share!:D

I recently finished work on my first ever Fairy mask and I am incredibly pleased with how well it turned out.:)

Here is a link to some photos of myself modeling the mask: http://enchantedmasque.livejournal.com/43085.html#cutid1

Unfortunately the camera didn't capture the colors all that well...in the photos the mask looks slightly blue-ish, but it is actually very purple.:)
-I am planning on wearing this mask as well as a pair of matching Fairy wings made by me, to the King Richards Faire next weekend and am very excited about it.:)

This mask is not for sale as I adore it too much, but I am open to commissions and do not mind making another of this design. Please e-mail me at EnchantedMasquerade@gmail.com for questions.:)

I am going to be creating an Autumn Fairy mask next and am very much excited about it. I think I may do several off of this design but in different colors, themes, and styles.:)

Thank you!

soft Faerie wings

I found some sheer fabric with soft pleats (think broomstick skirt fabric) , that I'd like to make SOFT, scarflike wings out of.
Not sticky-out wings with a frame- too pokey in crowds at festivals.

Similar to the Isis wings of belly dancers, but the fabric is not that crisp, and I don't think I want sticks at all.

Just attached to arms so that they are wings with arms raised..

Has anyone made something like this?
Any ideas for shaping these?

Some shape would be good. I was thinking maybe plastic tubing might work.

A Fairy Needs Your Vote

My name is Melissa Belland. I was in a band during the 80’s and 90’s called Voice Of The Beehive. When I was on tour in Australia I met a fairy and my life changed forever as I become a huge fan of fantasy and fairies and have been creating my own fairies out of clay and porcelain which I sell at a local art festival in Laguna Beach California called the Sawdust Festival. A friend of mine encouraged me to enter into an online “American Idol” type contest that Yahoo is running. The contest started with over 9000 people and has been reduced to 5 finalists and I'm one of them! (why they would select a fairy is beyond me but maybe there is some mischief at work here) This is a nationwide contest that's been covered in the local papers and has many press releases in the news. Yahoo recorded a video of each finalist and people on the internet vote. The video of me with my fairies is charming but looks odd when compared to the other 4 finalists that have manufactured products with elaborate business models. All my fairies are handmade with vintage fabric from the 40's, fabric from costumes I wore on stage, and a variety of crystals with natural fibers, wood, moss, and dried flowers. You can go to the Yahoo site and see the video along with the other 4 finalists but I thought since you were all members of the fairy community you might give me a vote.

I'd love to hear what you think and I would be VERY grateful for your vote. You can vote once a day until the 25th of June. If you don't have a Yahoo ID, you can create one in 1 minute and you don't need to provide any personal information or your current email address.

If any of you visit the Sawdust Festival this summer please stop by and introduce yourself. I would love to meet you.

Finally, if you send an email to: missy@madeinheavenbymissy.com and include your address I will send you a free fairy wand and a lucky bag of fairy dust. I could really use your vote. I think when you see my video at the Yahoo site you will see that I'm trying to make a difference and do it the right way without stepping on the earth and by creating original fairy art that I create with my hands and not in a factory in Mexico or China. You can vote once a day for each yahoo ID you have. Voting ends this Sunday. If I win, I will be able to quit my day job and create my fairies full time.

I'd love to hear from you.

Check out the video and tell me what you think (don’t forget to vote!!)
http://advision.webevents.yahoo.com/ultimateconnection/index.php?finalist=3
Thank you!!!!

Cheers,
Missy Beehive

I posted some pictures of new circlets we made for the Lightning in a Bottle Festival. It was a wonderful event and we did very well. It was our first time vending at a festival and opened our eyes to the possiblities of selling at more festivals. I know there's a big faerie fest in Oregon in July, but does anyone know of one closer to Los Angeles?

Now tis time for the fine print: First, we manually clean and cater to this email, so if you don't want to be here, just politely email us and we'll kick you off.

In just two months the flood gates open for the tenth year of these celebrations and our hands are quite busy to the task. To brighter inspirations and aspirations we keep our eyes and set the pace with furious vigor. But there's also a time to enjoy the moments you have my dear friends. Gaze about the duties of the day and admire what can be accomplished when your friends and lovers are side by side.

As I write this, we're placing our hands upon the largest amounts of clay and stone that we've ever had in Sypher Studios. Chipping and stitching through the days and night to build this singular focus for us all to enjoy. (BTW: We're making quite the mess so if you know a good soap to recommend, we're listening).

Well, there is much to do and time always burns so very quickly my friends. Keep your eyes bright and your dreams even brighter. The surrounding world shall beam with your subtle inspirations added into its hues. . .

Those hues and tribes united shall forge these dreams more solid than before.

So, I looked through all the threads and posts and didn't find exactly what I was looking for. I want to know how or where to get patterns for making faery clothing, specifically skirts and tops. Any suggestions? I don't mind having to go out and buy clothes instead, but I would rather learn to make my own faery clothes. Thanks so much in advance.

Aug. 13th to the 18th
http://web.mac.com/ibevan/iWeb/Site/Home.html

Hear is a quote from the sight.

"Merging the class and elegance of a Renaissance Faire with
the freshness of a Fairy Festival and the chaos of a Burning Man event, into one..."

“I realize the word ‘change’ is terrifying to the old school faire folk, but this production company is going to let the market decide what direction the faire goes in.
If the consumer wants a mob of cheerleaders that appear to be off the set of a “Road Warrior” movie, running through the faire dancing up a storm, creating the illusion that a mob of patrons have taken over the faire. Followed by a similarly attired marching band playing a very hip march with a back beat that you can’t help but want to swing to... then that’s what we’ll give them..!”

Phoenix Faerie Festival Merchant Deadline Reminder

Greetings,
I know that many of you have been off line during the holidays while directing priorities to the home and family, and perhaps in the shop preparing wares for many festival months ahead.

This is just a quick follow up reminder to those vendors who may still be considering a merchant booth spot at the April 2007 Phoenix Faerie Festival at beautiful Schnepf Farms in Queen Creek Arizona.

While the deadline for the early bird discount has expired, as of this date there are still spaces available. Final deadline for all applications and payment of vendor fees is February 28th 2007. Meaning that they must be received by Feb 28th.

You may forward your support documentation (even via email) during the last minute documents window of March 1st - March 25th. westerngatesfaeryrealms@yahoo.com

You can download an application on the Festival Web Site. It is a PDF file and includes most FAQ answers as well as rules and regulations for the festival.
If you have a question that we have not covered or questions regarding those that we have covered, please feel free to ask.

Also take a moment to review our web site and growing "friends" list on the Phoenix Faerie Festival MySpace (which has only been up since Aug 28th and now exceeds 1250 friends) The links are below in the signature section of this message.

We expect beautiful weather in the mid to upper 80's, and over 5000 visitors daily.

Thanks for your attention,
And we look forward to hearing from you.

Phoenix AZ Faerie Festival Merchant Vendor Apps Revised 10/25

Phx Faerie Festival Merchant App Revised

It was brought to our attention that the Merchant Vendor application was missing some crucial information and a bit difficult to fully understand.

So the application has been revised as of 10/25/06

Food vendors and Merchant vendor apps are now 2 seperate forms.

The Hand Craft only policy has been lifted to include other Retail merchandise which compliments the theme of the event. All merchandise whether hand crafted or retail must still be pre-approved by WGPFF jury staff.

All vendors must carry their own special event liability insurance, and must have an Arizona Privilege Tax ID.

So if you were put off by the complexity of the application previous to 10/25, or felt that your product wasn't appropriate, please take another look and consider being a part of the Phoenix Faerie Festival 2007.

If you have any questions, please ask us

Oh..I cant believe it! Pinch me! Im so happy to have found you. I was a lost faerie...only my private dress-up sessions and constant costume making to keep my spirits up. Many non-believers gave me "those looks" (you know those looks )when I brought up my adoration for all things faerie..and proudly displayed my latest wings. Shunned by mortals! Tell me everything...what have I missed? I feel like ive been sleeping in a faerie ring for ever! Thank you for this tribe!
May the element bless and keep you.
your fashionable faerie freind,

Suggestions for Favorite Faerie Footwear?

Being an incendiary fairy, and drawn to fire fun and dance, I find myself often in a place where I am in need of wearing shoes. Being the fairy I am, shoes are a foreign object of annoyance to me. In all my many years on planet earth, I have yet to find a pair of shoes worthy of my feet. As of late, my feet ache post a long dance party, and I find myself in need of assistance. I am wondering what other faerie divas wear for comfort AND style. I need suggestions for shoes to dance in. I do not like heals, and my feet do not like being confined......I also like white.....and sparkly things.....thought of glitterized gogo boots, but have yet to find a flat pair for comfort. Any suggestions from the faerie world? Thanks and Beautiful Blessings......

Recent change to the Dryad sculpture artist challenge

Sigh....As persuant to a discussion with my consulting pannel ..."ok, my son"
The following changes have been made with regards to the perameters of sculpture submissions.

Dryad/Ent Art Sculptures must be;

1. *minimum size (4 ft) maximum size (10 ft) <NEW

*NOT sexually graphic (genital areas and female nipples must be cleverly concealed within the artistic construct of the project)

2. The above rule regarding the extent of explicit nudity has been stricken "against my better judgement"

However I reserve the right to exclude anything that is truly extreme and beyond the limits of reasonably good taste.
So please use some judgement.

Arizona Faerie Festival

We are busy plotting and planning our Faerie Festival celebration here in Arizona.
Easter weekend April 7th & 8th 2007.

Yes, I was actually able to find a superb location in Queencreek just an hour S/E from downtown Phoenix!
Schnepf Farms provides a 40 acre GREEN grass field surrounded on all sides by a mature line of Pine and Cottonwood trees.
I'm really excited!!!! (me, jumping up and down)

Camping will be available "for those with weekend passes" through the farm owners and is seperate from any event ticket fees, however very reasonable. Dry camping is only $20 pr night. http://www.schnepffarms.com/

Merchant spots are still available, and we are actively seeking sponsors as well as other service providers.
So feel free to pass the word.
